It is reported that three casinos in Massachusetts will be closed for about two to three weeks. Two gaming properties in Rhode Island will be closed for a week. It is all due to Corona virus outbreak.

The Massachusetts gaming commission voted on Saturday to close the Encore, the MGM Springfield, and Plainridge Park Casino from this weekend.

The decision was made in collaboration and cooperation with our licensees to safeguard the health and well being of casino guests, employees and regulators.” The Massachusetts Gaming Commission said in a statement on Saturday

Boston Globe reported that Utah Jazz basketball star Donovan Mitchell visited the Encore on March 5th. He played in the high limit area of the gaming floor for about an hour. He later tested positive for Corona virus.

The news report states that Massachusetts had 123 people test positive for Corona virus on Friday.

As we all continue to navigate this unprecedented and rapidly evolving situation, our agency and our licensees will remain in close consultation with public health authorities and government officials to determine safe protocols for resuming operation,” the commission statement adds. “This decision will be re-assessed in two weeks, while an orderly shutdown process is actively underway.

The casinos at Massachusetts will continue to pay their workers during this closure. This was reported by MassLive. The cleaning crew, security and the human resources staff will continue to report to work during this closure period.

The casinos at Rhodes Island are closed for a week

A similar decision was taken on Friday to close the Twin River Casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton in Rhodes Island, for a week. There were 20 Corona virus cases at Rhodes Island on Saturday, as reported by the News.

Rhodes Island Lottery Director Gerry Aubin said in a statement on Friday, “In consultation with the Rhode Island Department of Health, we have ordered the Twin River Casino and the Tiverton Casino to be closed to the public,”

The maximum number of employees will not be getting their pay during this week long period. It was reported by the Providence Journal, “Impacted employees will be eligible for unemployment benefits,” The state lottery statement was quoted by the journal.

These seven days the entire cleaning crew and security staff with other workers will be present at the casinos.

It is expected that this closure will last for a week. The situation will be reassessed on the availability of updated data and as per the guidance of Rhodes Island Health Department, as per the lottery statement. “Our top priority is the safety of Rhode Islanders.”

“We sincerely regret any inconvenience to our customers,” Marc Crisafulli, President of Twin River, was additionally quoted by the Journal.”However, the state’s efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus are of paramount importance.”

“We believe this preventative approach is a necessary step to help ensure the health and safety of our employees, customers, and all Rhode Islanders.”

Casinos remain open in nearby Connecticut, Mohegan Sun and Foxwood Resorts.

Nationwide closure due to Corona virus

Other gaming properties are closing or cutting down on their operations elsewhere. A long term trainer and an office worker died with Corona virus infection at MGM Northfield Park at Ohio and MGM’s Yonkers Raceway.

Boyd Gaming temporarily closed their Valley Forge Casino Resort at Pennsylvania. Many other casinos at Pennsylvania were also closed.

The Wildhorse Resort and Casino was closed for deep cleaning for two days, after a worker was declared presumptive positive for COVID-19.

A news report stated that, The Illinois Gaming Board ordered 10 casinos to close in each of the state for two weeks.

MGM has also declared closure of night clubs and day clubs. Spas and salons will remain closed from Monday. About 150 Food and Beverage venues will close on rolling basis.

MGM’s unspecified number of worker’s furloughs and layoffs will start from next week.
